The bottom line on bots and horses! Well, bots are one of the many pests that can bother and potentially harm your horse. Bots are a variety of fly, and even though they live part of the life inside your horse, they are not a worm. Parasite, yes, worm no. The adult female botfly makes it her mission to lay about 500 eggs on your horse.

DR LYDIA GRAY: So bot eggs are those little, yellow, sticky, oval, substances that are on the front legs, and sort of the elbow area, and maybe the belly, kind of places where the horse can't reach real well. And so manufacturers make what's known as a bot egg knife, and it's got a serrated edge.
Typically, bot eggs are laid in clusters, as shown, but may be more spread out and evenly distributed on the legs, body, or even face. These eggs, which look like small, yellow drops of paint, must be carefully removed during the laying season (late summer and early fall) to prevent infestation in the horse. When a horse rubs its nose on its legs, the eggs are transferred to the mouth and from there to the intestines , where the larvae grow and attach themselves to the stomach lining or the small intestine. Adult bot flies lay their eggs on horses in the fall in the northern hemisphere. The flies do this instinctively. A basic part of the bot's life cycle requires that the horse bite at and swallow the eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae that over-winter attached to the lining of the horse's stomach.
