Nancy Holt was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1938 and grew up in New Jersey. A pioneer of earthworks and public art, Nancy Holt also worked in sculpture, installation, film, video, and photography for over 30 years. She is best known for her large-scale environmental sculptural works, including “Sun Tunnels” in Northern Utah and “Dark Star Park” in Virginia.
Her concrete and steel constructions helped free sculpture from the gallery context. These contemplative, often elegiac monuments to time and to the land, Nancy Holt passed away in New York City in 2014. From 1973 until 2014 she cared for the Estate of Robert Smithson, whom she married in 1963. In 2014 Nancy Holt willed Holt/Smithson Foundation into being.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Holt made a series of pioneering film and video works, including several Nancy Holt (1938-2014) was a member of the earth, land, and conceptual art movements. Composed of four concrete cylinders that are 18 feet in length and 9 feet in diameter, Sun Tunnels is arranged in an open cross format and aligned to frame the sun on the horizon during the summer and winter solstices.
